Since its founding in the nineteenth century, the scientific study of organisms beyond the scope of human vision, the microbiological science, has focused on the isolation, identification, and elimination of pathogens from human and from food and drinking water. Examination of nonpathogenic forms to understand their structure and function led to their classification and helps to control or exploit their activities.
